Circe - Mother of Pokémon

Waterhouse meets Pokemon!
Finally there it is! This one was more work than it should have been, on the other hand, I´m so busy with projects, I feared I would never finish it:P

And I started this piece when I played Pokemon Go over 2 months ago;)

In this piece I had to recreate the whole painting as most sources where nearly unusable and I believe even the original looks unfinished in parts of the background. I took the liberty to finish and improve/restorate the painting where necessary and build a story with the little creatures around it that is different than the actual story of Circe.

In the original painting called Circe Invidiosa Waterhouse meant to display greek mythology in which Circe was about to poison the water to turn Scylla into a monster. What lies closer to this than to add monsters to this painting that are starving for some kind of elixir?

There is also a workshop about composition that my dear patrons will be able to download. The workshop will contain a PDF guide, some process GIF's and a mid-res version of this piece. On the bottom of this post are some examples of the PDF-content.

The full image - formerly "Circe offering the Cup"
Close up on the painted area of Circe's head and hand
Vileplume close up to show more of the alla prima technique used to recreate Waterhouse's style
On several characters I had to use layer texture overlay's to add structure to the hand painted canvas look
The texture overlay makes the creature part of the painting and prevent that it looks "pasted"
Some compositional decisions included to decide which character should stand out being easily readable and which should stay in the back to be discovered in a second look. Emolga is a great example for non-obstrusive inceptionism because her tail shows there is something different, but her appearance is captured in the second or closer look on viewing the piece.
Golden rectangle alignment - notice the harmonic overlapping of the existing Waterhouse work and the new Pokemon additions.
Here is a quick process of the painting development. Note that the complete description about composition is part of the before-mentioned PDF guide that you can download here: https://gumroad.com/l/kWxSl
